Getting Older? 4 Steps To Improving Your Overall Cognitive Function

Blog

It isn't uncommon for people to not look forward to growing old. However, it is possible to age gracefully so that you don't have to dread it. Growing old, despite what you may believe, does not mean that you can't get out of the house and see the beautiful world outside. Healthy aging is possible if you stay positive and maintain certain things in your life. Here are a few tips to help you promote healthy aging so that your golden years are just that – golden:

1. Stimulate Your Brain.

As your body and brain ages, you will begin to lose some of your cognitive ability. You can fight this decline and preserve your memory by exercising your mind. To do this, you may want to consider reading books regularly, playing memory games and working on crossword puzzles – all of which will help to improve brain function and enhance brain connectivity. Anything that gets those creative juices in the brain going is a good thing for you.

2. Stay Physically Active.

Studies suggest the thinking and memory skills can be preserved for when they reach midlife by individuals who engage in aerobic activities while they are young adults. Studies also show that the risk of developing dementia can be reduced later in life by engaging in physical activity at middle age at least twice a week.

It doesn't matter if you are simply taking your dog for a walk around the block each morning or you are actively in the garden every single afternoon tending to weeds, plants and vegetables. As long as you are staying active, you will be able to maintain your overall healthy – both physically and emotionally.

3. Surround Yourself with Loved Ones.

One of the best ways to successfully age gracefully and happily is to maintain a good support system. Only surround yourself with those who love and support you. These people are the best individuals to help keep you happy and occupied. If family members aren't close enough, consider joining a lunch group or a club (book, gardening or art clubs are good ideas) to stay social. Staying busy will help you avoid excessive alone time, which could cause depression. Moreover, loneliness has been shown to increase your chance of premature death by 14 percent.

4. Get Your Groove On.

According to research, dancing is one of the best leisure activities to help you stay mentally sharp and physically healthy. It exercises your mind, your body and your soul while also helping to prevent dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other memory-related conditions.

To stay as healthy as possible as you age, you will want to make sure you are consistently visiting your physician. In addition, if you require home medical care or supplies, don't hesitate to contact your local home health care company to see about having a home health aide come out to your home a couple of times a week, or as often as necessary.
